Recoil spring for the 5 inch standard length 1911 pistol. Please select # desired. The standard recoil spring for a 1911 45 acp pistol is 18.5 lbs. Many like the 16 lb for it makes it easier for racking the slide and generally works well with most loads. 1911 pistols in different calibers will need different recoil springs. Below are some suggestions to start with, BUT it is a good idea to try several in the approximate lb you think will work for your application. The lb of spring may need to be changed for reliable function of your pistol if you are changing loads and bullet weights. Also, how tight your frame to slide fit will also be a factor in the proper recipe for a recoil spring. 45 acp – 14 lb to 20 lb, 18.5 lb being standard. 10mm – 17lb to 23 lb, 20 being standard 40 S&W – 14lb to 19lb, approximately 16 being standard (depends on manufacture) 9mm – 7 lb to 15lb, approximately 12 being standard (depends on manufacture) 38 Super – 7lb to 16lb, approximately 13 being standard (depends on manufacture) You will notice very light springs for calibers such as 9mm and 38 Super. These are generally used for customized pistols that are being tuned for specific loads and specific competition shooting.
